    Theranos

I finally got the missing piece of the puzzle.

Elizabeth Holmes is scared of needles.

I did not know this, but knowing this, the picture of the Theranos debacle comes into perfect focus in all its disgusting late-stage-capitalism society-run-by-a-cadre-of-moneyed-elites glory.

Holmes hates needles. Most people just deal, but not Holmes - she is from a stratum of society that does not have to "just deal" with anything.

There was never a discovery, never an invention of a magic way of doing pathology without blood samples, never any real reason to suppose such a thing could possibly work. It wasn't "invent something wonderful, sell it". It was "I want X, pull together 9B worth of capital, hire some trained seals - they'll come up with something." And then she sold it like it was already a thing - business partnerships, the lot.

They key thing I'm trying to bring out here is how it was all just the personal whim of one person. Just like if one of those people happens to like yachting, billions of dollars will pour into sailing research. If one of those people happens to like - I dunno - bees, billions of dollars will go into honey.

A dollar isn't nothing: it's a proxy for human effort. The median US income is about 30kpa - 1.2M over a working lifetime. 9B is another way of saying "the entire lifetime productive output of 7500 regular schlubs". And someone like Holmes can just make it happen, can commandeer that amount of society's productive effort, because they don't like needles.

The whole business, the whole 9B, the runiation of hundreds of careers, the loss of people's retirement savings, was all down to one person's dislike of a thing. And an entire society, an entire legal and financial system that means that those particular people can do whatever the hell they want.

Meet Larry Ellison, billionaire. He hires scientists to "cure death." Never mind what an environmental catastrophe that would be. He just doesn't want to die.

If I was going to hell, I wouldn't want to die either!

Often times we suffer from the idea that we can bypass fundamental realities via technology. However, I would argue that in the end we must be able recognize that if something is too good to be true and does not pass vigorous trials and errors then it is pure fantasy.

The fantasy is often more alluring than the reality.

Its not just about the elite - that's the power every women possesses when they're young. They've got the power to marry or amass an army of simps who will throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at them, in some cases even millions. Women can generally commandeer the productive effort of several lifetimes of several men.

What do they usually do with it? Mostly fritter it away on useless consumer goods.

Imagine how much productive effort has been wasted over the generations. Thousands of men, slaving away for HER - all for want of a handbag or a pair of designer shoes that costs as much as a car. Or men who throw money for a vial of her dirty bathwater, or a casual mention on her stream. The years of productive capacity going to waste.

The full weight of the legal system behind them. Its like we're living in a dystopia.

Dude, guys buy ANYTHING from women....I was in car sales after college and the worst salespeople were women - no closing skills, worst product knowledge, scam other salesmens deals etc. But they would sell people all the time, women trust women and the simp guys would buy the car just to have a decent woman pay attention to them. As for Theranos, well if a lady can sell her farts in a jar for $1,000 each is there any reason why people wouldn't buy a cool story business investment??
