The Twitter board has approved Musk's buyout bid

    This just in.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Twitter, Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by an entity wholly owned by Elon Musk, for $54.20 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately $44 billion. Upon completion of the transaction, Twitter will become a privately held company.

Under the terms of the agreement, Twitter stockholders will receive $54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter common stock that they own upon closing of the proposed transaction. The purchase price represents a 38% premium to Twitter's closing stock price on April 1, 2022, which was the last trading day before Mr. Musk disclosed his approximately 9% stake in Twitter.

April 25, 2022 - Elon Musk to Acquire Twitter
Musk has stated his desire to end the selective blocking of posts, including political ones. Likely this means the return of President Trump as an active member.

    Elon Musk tweeted today:

I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means

I just read articles in the Daily Mail and the Babylon Bee about this. I could hardy tell them apart. Could someone pass the popcorn?

Good, the liberal left has lost this battle against suppressing free speech. Now conservatives will have a voice on the internet.

I wonder what this means for Truth Social. Its scaling problems were fixed when it transferred to the Rumble infrastructure about a week or so ago. Unfortunate timing, though. The fix may have come too late. Wonder if it will fade away now.

If he bans and censors the libtards harder than the Russians hit Mariupol, we just might reattain free speech!

I hope he doesn't do like Trump (be a niceguy) and expect bipartisanship within Twitter, rather than shit canning the whole lot.

Re: The Twitter board has approved Musk's buyout bid

When all news media and social media censor ideas they don't like, they basically have a monopoly on the public discourse. Only certain thoughts and ideas are allowed.

But the thing about monopolies is that when you lose just one part of it, you ultimately lose all of it.

If Musk is serious about creating a free speech platform, that has ramifications for all other social media. The edgiest, most outrageous content will necessarily be on Twitter. People will flock there to see the chaos and the shit show for themselves. That will have a negative impact on YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, etc. Why shitpost on Facebook and risk a ban when you can tweet it with few (or no) consequences?

The other social networks will eventually have to adjust to the new reality of Musk's Twitter. Reluctantly, begrudgingly, against their will, as a last resort and only when all other options have failed. But they will have to adjust or go out of business.

And from the looks of things, Musk SEEMS to be serious about creating a free speech-friendly platform. Mind you, the last time America trusted a billionaire with their right to free speech, it didn't work out very well.

I came up during the wild west of the Internet. I adore the Internet being a train wreck of glorious chaos, misspelled posts, free floating hostility and the occasional good idea. To me, that's what made the Internet so wonderful back in the old days. And there's a small chance we could get some of that back.

I'm hearing on Newsmax it could be 6 months before anything noticeable occurs. That would be damn close to the (U.S.) midterms. Great timing for "certain information" about "certain individuals" to show up (finally) on a platform of worldwide notoriety.

    lol wut?

Mike Cernovich, Scott Adams and others have reported (and shown graphs documenting) an uptick in their follower count, their tweet engagement (and tweet visibility), etc. But that could be somewhat chalked up to curious people coming back to/signing up for Twitter following yesterday's news.

What seems more open and shut to me are hashtags like #Pocahantas and #LiberalTears trending in seemingly free form. They're not being suppressed and they're not being weighted toward leftwing retorts, culture jamming or what have you.

We are not in the clear yet. But the early signs from the last 24 hours paint a promising picture.

EDIT- Something else. I make it a policy to never trust the altruism of someone who can buy a company with the money he has in his pocket. And yet, it seems quite logical to assume that Musk's Twitter will welcome Trump back. Trump attracted a LOT of attention to that platform. It simply makes no sense whatsoever to keep him on the sidelines. Bringing him back (even if it's with a purely symbolic finger-wag) will be a boon to the platform.

New CEO's of almost ANY company will usually make One Big Move in their first 60 days to demonstrate that the company is under new management. It's hard to think of a bigger move than Musk's Twitter unbanning Trump and welcoming him back into the fold. It'll get an important user back into the game, it'll create tons of headlines, people will be engaging more on Twitter (whether it's pro or anti Trump) and it's the sort of big dick energy I might expect from Musk.

I'm not guaranteeing this will happen. I'm just saying that people shouldn't be surprised if it does.

Trump stated he will not return to Twitter if unbanned, but will stay on Truth Social. I wonder how long he could hold out on that.

I voted for the man four times (2016 primary, 2016 election, 2020 primary, 2020 election). So, I can (affectionately) say that he's no stranger to changing his mind.

With Twitter open to anyone, I would love to go on there and say things that would make a leftwing liberal cry like a melted snowflake. It'll be fun.

I'd like to join Twitter now that Musk owns it, just as a sign of support, except the very notion of participating in social media of any kind makes me want to puke.

    My sentiments exactly.

I've thought about it, and maybe I could post about MGTOW if/when I felt like it, without getting censored.

Eh. Give it a month or two and then find likeminded people that you can @ and share hashtags with to amplify each other. And if you do it, stick with humorous or edgy takes. Don't even try to be serious.

Basically, avoid all or most of the style you see around here.

What's your insight on that? What would go wrong?

I don't fully understand the @ and hashtag way of communicating which sounds like I'd be attacking a specific individual, if that's why you advise to not be serious.

Is tweeting all about one-on-one snarking, but with an audience? Never general discussion like we do here?

Currently, I post on redstate and breitbart all sorts of comments, some serious, some humorous, often I am dead serious and to the point about the topic, but most everybody there is conservative, like me, so no infighting happens to me. I'll comment against women (liberals) on occasion.
