Ahh gentlemen, I know I am a few days late with this topic, but I was celebrating hard last Monday when I checked up on NHL.com and finding out that my favorite hockey franchise, the Colorado Avalanche, won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001. That's a whopping 21 years! I remember that I was a kid when I bought NHL '96 for the SNES because for some reason I liked hockey, even if that sport hardly had any fans here. There's a BeNeLiga competition (Belgian and Dutch teams) for a while now, but nobody really cares about it.
Anyways, I played NHL '96 a lot. A LOT. But I didn't have a favorite team. I liked the NY Rangers, the Philadelphia Flyers (for their color combination of white, black and orange), the Pittsburgh Penguins (for their logo back then), but none of them really stood out for me. And then I bought NHL '98 for the PC. It had Peter Forsberg on the cover, I really digged his name, his number (#21), and the color combination of his jersey (burgundy, blue and white) and started playing with the Avs only, other teams had no interest to me anymore. I was 14 back then and stuck with the Avs ever since. Back then I didn't know that they went from being the Quebec Nordiques to the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, neither did I know that they already won the Cup back in 1996, but I cheered when they won it in 2001, the same year my favorite football (soccer) team won our nation's Cup.
I was thrilled about this season, frustrated that they didn't manage to score the most points for two years in a row (the Florida Panthers did, very surprisingly!), and felt uncertain about the first best of seven in the playoffs when they had to face the Predators. Those guys were notoriously difficult to beat for the Avs, but they swept them 4-0! Next stop were the Blues, and they were beaten as well. I felt that the Avs would show their typical fuckup against the Oilers, but nope, 4-0 sweep again! I was hopeful yet scared when I found out that the Lightning were to be "our" opponent in the finals, even if they struggled against the NY Rangers, and moreso when they managed to win Game 5, taking the score to 3-2. In typical NHL '96 fashion, I fully expected the Bolts to win the last two games since it happened all the time when I played that game (teams would even lead 3-0 and then lose 3-4 in the end), but our boys got their act together and won the Cup in Tampa Bay, and I was so fucking thrilled that I got drunk as fuck while replaying the match over and over again
I don't know if there are any other Avs fans in here, or Bolts fans, but if there are, you're either a bro or a very well respected opponent!
