All I can add is that, from what I understand, the vaccines do protect against the very worst symptoms of the condition (the end-stage respiratory problems, the stuff that puts you on a vent) and the likelihood of death. They don't do much to stop you getting or spreading it, but they do seem to be effective in protecting against death. So although he's getting worse, I think there is reason to hope that it will not progress to the end stages that take his life. In the meantime, there will be plenty of suffering and worry, though, I know.
