    is my home ip blocked?

I was accessing the site on my home computer and was searching for a thread with youtube videos, all of a sudden the site stopped working. I tried accessing the site using my phone, same thing. Using mobile data I can access the site just fine. Was I blacklisted for searching too much in a row or something? Please fix it because I hate using phones. Thank you!

Re: is my home ip blocked?

If you're able to get to the site in any fashion, then there's nothing wrong here.

In the first case, you were using your home computer, and I'm assuming it's LAN-connected, i.e. either a)WiFi or b)wired <-> your router <-> cable modem <-> Internet.
In the second case, you say you tried to access the site with your phone, and I'm assuming the phone was LAN-connected, i.e. WiFi <-> your router <-> cable modem <-> internet.
In the third case, you used the phone's cellular connection instead of its LAN/WiFi connection.

(You may have your router and cable modem in one box on your premises. That's how some service providers do it.)

If that's all true, then your ISP (Internet service provider) could be experiencing a routing problem, or a network outage between where you are and where the site servers are located, or a problem with its DNS (domain name system) servers.

Here's a test you can do. Assuming you're using a Windows system at home, open a command window and type the following command:

    nslookup goingyourownway.com

You should get a returned result that looks like this:

    Name: goingyourownway.com
    Address: 208.79.239.118

If that works, then do this:

    tracert goingyourownway.com

This will trace the path your requests to / responses from the servers takes. An occasional timeout is fine as long as the test proceeds. You should get a dozen or so lines, depending where your ISP is located relative to the GYOW servers. Give it a minute or so. If the test completes and you get the same IP address at the end you got with the nslookup command (208.79.239.118), then your ISP is good. If things stall out (like after 3-4 minutes), then something's "broken" between your home and these servers.

    EDIT: Fix typo.
EDIT #2: Add "open command window."

BTW, I'm assuming other Web sites are accessible from your PC and (LAN-connected) phone.

The dns ip is correct and the traceroute works. But I can't access the site either through Firefox or edge (or Firefox on my phone). The connection times out.

    Hm... weird...

In a command window, issue the following command and tell me what the DNS server's IP address is:

    nslookup

Switched to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) and it's still timing out. The site's IP is correct in the DNS.

Well, you're doing everything right as far as I can tell.

This is a "shotgun" solution, but have you tried rebooting your modem and router? I know, it doesn't make any sense a reboot would fix things, but I've seen a lot stranger things in the networking world. Also, you said the site was working ok, so either the router and/or the modem might have gone off into the ozone, and a reboot might fix that.

Another thing: I looked at your location and it seems like you're seeing some high temps today. Any chance your network gear is running hot where it's located?

(If you can get to other web sites fine, then disregard.)

You can also check this web site for reports on whether your ISP is having problems. As you probably know, the Internet is a wild tangle of routers, so an "outage" may affect only certain network packet sources, routes, and destinations, i.e. not the ISP's entire infrastructure.

Re: is my home ip blocked?

I tried unplugging/plugging in the router and modem in hopes of being assigned a new IP, but it didn't work. Access from my home IP is still being blocked. I can PM the IP to whoever is in charge, who is that?

Sounds like you're coincidentally blocked by someone else's global/regional address that has been permanently banned from the site.

Sucks when you live near assholes and how pervasive they are! Try logging in from a VPN or try a different device.

I would PM Unboxxed. Maybe he can help. But I don't know... I read through all your posts and I see nothing that would even remotely risk you getting blocked. I like mgtower's train of thought. Last time your modem pulled an address from the free pool, it might have been assigned an address that's blocked here. Except I thought they blocked only on username, not on IP address.

It's also possible the site was attacked by your current IP address's last "owner" and so it's now blocked at the firewall (hardware or software) directly in front of the site's network interface. If virtual machines are involved -- and there's a significant probability of that -- then things get a bit trickier.

Looks like 6 days later, my home IP is not blocked anymore and I can access the site and log in again. Weird.

That's the last time I'll use the forum search feature, I'll use Google next time.

That's really odd, but I'm glad it's fixed! If you were still having problems I would have suggested using the Opera browser with its built-in VPN service, or going to Hidemyass.com and picking a free IP, both help with situations like this.

Honestly, I have never encountered such a problem, have you tried contacting your Internet provider?

Re: is my home ip blocked?

    Sometimes shit happens.

Recently I was blocked from this site. I tried three different bowsers with and without two different VPNs. Same result for about an hour - no contact, or more accurately sporadic contact.

There was one error message that appeared though on one of my attempts to connect.

I can't remember the exact message but it was something along the lines of: "Too many connections to this address ..."

I remember thinking: this is a DOS (Denial Of Service) attack.

I would assume that it's not about your home IP being blocked, more that it's an attack on the site.

If you easily get access using mobile data, but you can't do it by connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, then I can advise you to use proxy servers to use YouTube and other sources with which problems arise. In order to figure out what it is and how it works, you can find information on the Internet. I can also advise you on the (URL redacted by frog). server, which can be a lifeline for you, which will help you use the Internet for your pleasure. Good luck to you! I hope my advice will help you.
