    Evil Kenivel

Sept 8th is 47 years since Evil's last jump, the Snake River Canyon. I was returning home from my first summer on the road, it was on the way, why not?
The jump was a non event. Evil popped his drag chute on the way up the ramp and only made it to the middle of the canyon. The wind blew him back and he landed ten feet from the riverbank. He was back on the south rim in no time. Only story I ever heard that sounded good came years later. It said while Evil had a contract to jump from the south side, his deal with the BLM on the north side of the canyon had fallen through. Though I didn't think anything of it then, the north side of the canyon had nothing. No people, official's or fans, and no rigs, not even a truck or two.
If that's true, he couldn't jump or the BLM would do him. If he backed out he'd have to refund a ton of money. Either way Evil and his friends would lose their ass. So they did what they had to do and played dumb.
Even had he made it, the jump was a poor second to watching Evil's fans. I've never seen their like, before or since. Even for 1974 it was epic. Someone had clued me in to a small local park a mile upstream from Evil's official campground, and that's where I set up.
First thing I noticed, was most a these people were at least part time dealers. Some selling wares I'd never heard of. Friday was wide open, Friday night even more so. The cops decided the jail wasn't big enough, and wisely stepped aside for once. The stayed up on the south rim and watched people come and go. Saturday night was less wild, I suppose supply's were running low. Still, there were no straight people there. Gotta say though, there were no fights or even arguments far as I could tell. Wacked out a their minds they might a been, but nobody looked for trouble.
Maybe 20% of us were bikers. Most of his fans admired Evil because of the risks he was willing to take, not for whatever bike skills he might of had. By the end of the weekend I'd seen at least a few hundred people who were just as big a risk takers as Evil. You can only wonder what they drove like getting to Twin Falls... Oh well, I wasn't much better back then.
By Sunday I was sick a the place and had the bike loaded up. Evil was hardly back to the south rim and I was starting the bike. I was the first one out of town, even the road to the freeway was empty.

I watched him jump at Riverside, Agawam, Mass. He jumped in spite of a wet track, a short takeoff, and a short landing.

My uncle got us in the next day to meet our childhood hero. The ramps were still up and #1. encouraged me to walk up the ramp to see the span up close and personal, it grew by 5 miles from the profile I saw the night before.

There's no famous person on earth that I'd want to have met more than #1. and the impression he gave me was that he was a regular joe and a real warm likable guy. He didn't have to waste 45 minutes talking to us when he should have been packing up.

Fame did not go to that man's head as he struck us as one if the guys! Never mind that he did his jumps with Harleys!

I was just a kid in the 70's and although I had the toy motorbike and EK figure I never really knew who he was! I just watched the Snake River Canyon jump on Youtube it was a bit of a non event. I watched a few of his jumps and Robbies. The Grand Canyon jump was pretty cool by Robbie.

An old documentary said Evil did his first jump in Moses Lake Washington where he was a bike dealer. Was a promo for some local event. For whatever reason, they had him jumping over some local wildlife, including a cardboard box of rattlesnakes! Evil landed a bit short, flipping the box into the crowd. Nobody got bit, but I sure don't know how. In case you don't know, Moses Lake is so far out there they have to pump in daylight.
Evil's campground was a huge field by the launch ramp. It was no doubt hot, noisy and smelly, with a dust cloud you could see a mile away. That's where most of the people were. Don't remember who told me about the local park, but I'm sure glad they did.
So you got to meet ole Evil in the flesh, eh Tower? Alright. I didn't get no closer than a mile and change.
If he hadn't popped his chute early, there's no doubt the skycycle would of made the jump easy. So there was some dirty work going on.

Just going down memory lane here but what I like is that not all of his jumps were successful it made it more authentic. If you had the same thing now everything would be perfect and choreographed right down to the last detail. It would be boring. And of course every jump would be a success.

I watched him jump the London buses and he even has to switch bikes because the first one had a mechanical issue. You wouldn't see that now.
