Thread: Do any of you guys pay for house cleaning services?

This dude in the video recommends just paying a cleaning service so that you don't have do to so much housework yourself. Every weekend, I take a bunch of my time to do the housework around here. I usually just put music on and do it. I just feel better if my place is clean and orderly. So I do it. On the other hand, that time I spend on it is time lost. Some guys say you're better off just paying to have it done, but I'm not sure I'm so comfortable having a stranger in my home. It's not like I'm doing a lousy job at it. I'm doing okay, but after a few hours doing this shit, I usually don't feel like doing other stuff, so I take it easy a while. Maybe I would be more productive with my creativity if someone else took care of the house stuff. I could be writing my comedy routines.

I'm curious if anyone here has used cleaning services and what your impressions were.

Yes, I have done that for quite a while now. I spend about $100 U.S. per cleaning. I have it done twice a month and tidy up in between myself. I used to use a service, but now, since my daughter moved to my town, I pay her to do it. Well worth it for me- and I’d just as soon pay my kid rather than a maid.

I use a service also. What a luxury.

Easily affordable now that I don't support a female. Got a tiny place. $75.00 per visit. Use them every other week.

I use the extra time it now allows me to screw off in any way I see fit. Priceless!

Someone once told me "If you don't hire an assistant, you ARE the assistant," meaning, if your time is valuable, why not outsource the stuff that does not have value.

So, in Southern California, I first hired a cleaning service. After sending the same 2-3 person crew over, the leader asked me if would just pay them directly, off-the-cleaning company's books. They did a great job, and they charged me a little less, probably the percentage they had to hand over to the company.

I didn't ask their immigration status, and they didn't tell.

If it was 3 of them, they would be in and out in an hour while I washed, dried, and folded my laundry. If it was just the guy and his wife without her sister, they would take about 90 minutes.

I have in several houses. I am pretty clean so have often had them in every 2-3 wks. Highly recommend.

However I moved into a large 1 br and clean it myself only because it's so easy. I basically do one job (or two, spend max 1 hr) per week.

Pro tip if you work from home. I use a wireless headset and sometimes do it during the mandatory useless calls I have to be on to do it.

My mom hired someone of questionable immigration status to do that stuff back when I was in high school.

It was a disaster.

Some of my belongings randomly went missing (and there's NO WAY the maid would've wanted to steal, like, my old Pantera CD's; the shit was just GONE), the maid found "shortcuts" like not cleaning the wood floor under my parents bed, clothes were washed with barely any detergent at all and so forth. My personal favorite was my mom's glass collection. My parents went on a trip to Europe and brought back a collection of glasses from their vacation. You know, a souvenir.

One by one over a period of about two years, the maid broke the glasses. Every gd one of them.

Meanwhile, the maid always remembered to bring her unholy crotchspawn with her. They watched my parents TV, ate their food, jumped on their furniture, made messes and basically dragged the maid's time out even more!

Eventually, I jumped my mom's shit about it, told her she's paying $X for services that are not only NOT being rendered, but she's actually doing damage either actively or passively every time she comes to the house.

So, my mom ultimately let her go. The ingrate called my mom "racist" on her way out. Me, I was just happy to know that the maid spoke a fucking word of English at all. She'd only been in this country for thirty years, between shitting out a bunch of anchor babies and scamming her sister's welfare, I can see where she might not have had time to learn the local language.

If others of you have different (and better) experiences, good for you. But I've learned the hard way that if you want something done right, do it yourself.

This tells me if I get a service, I'd better be choosy and not just hire the lowest bidder. That sounds like a nightmare.

When I retired, I downsized to a two bedroom apartment, which is too big. I have so few things, I really only need a large studio. I don't want any women/strangers in my domicile and it's easy to do on my own, so I take care of everything myself. When I get to the point where I can no longer care for myself, I'm checking out for good. Any sign of dementia means it's time to either get assisted suicide or a gun. The 4th age is the end and I'm hoping to control how and when I go. My will and trust are there to ensure my assets don't get raided by some greedy, malevolent con artist. If I get hit by a stroke that permanently disables me, my will states that all of my future dealings go into a state conservator's hands. When I die, the trustee/executor named in my trust takes over - and that's pretty much it. I get converted into worm food.

She was a neighbors nanny that wanted to make some money on the side. She has since moved back to Central America. last quote I got was $200 from a 'service'

I clean my own place. It's small so its easy.

I live in a small 2 bedroom/1 bathroom flat. My son only spends a few days at a time at my place, so there's hardly any mess on his behalf either.

I'm also a minimalist, which means I have very few possessions, and hate keeping useless crap in my home!

Thus, I clean my place by myself, and it's an easy effortless task, that I can finish in under 30-40 minutes! Not kidding!

The result is: a save cash for other more pleasurable activities, I get to keep my privacy by not letting strangers in my home/near my possessions, and the cleaning is done just the way I like it.

Granted, I'm healthy, fit, and relatively still young (late 40s), and my back and my joints can take the cleaning without aching after it all. When I reach my senior age, and my physical health starts to fail, then ultimately I'll have to resort to hiring someone, sadly.

I think about it, but so far I haven't. I live in a small place, and I have plenty of free time, so doing a little sweeping and vacuuming isn't a big deal. It's not as if it's taking time away from writing the Great American Novel or something.

I end up spending maybe 15 minutes a week on it. I could get a maid service, but so far I've just decided to do it myself. It's easier and simpler. If I were a clean freak, I would probably spring for a service, but I'm not that picky.

Maybe if I could find a topless maid service...

I did hire a maid service once, for a thorough, one-time cleaning. They charged me $300. I'm sure a regular service would be cheaper, but I'd still bet it would be over $100. I'd rather just do it myself.

To put it delicately, your best bet is to find a service that employs only actual American citizens. I'm not recommending a cleaning service at all, frankly. But if you're determined to do it, find one who hires actual Americans. Anything less than that is ASKING for trouble.

I am in Germany and I negotiated a housekeeper as included in the rent. So instead of dropping the monthly rent by 100euro/month the LL agreed to use one of his housekeepers 2x a month. basically 50 euro for 3 hours of cleaning services twice a month.

As a solo tidy male it's the easiest job for her and the landlord was happy to agree to know his place isnt going to be filthy by a deepbeat tenant.

Win Win.


I am also a minimalist the past 5years. Have about 5 boxes of stuff to my name plus a few computers and a paid off car.

Of course I do. I don't spend a second doing home chores. Time is my most valuable resource. Money is meaningless and I have plenty. Time, I have so little of it. So little. Why would I spend the small time I have doing home chores if I can pay someone to do it for me?

I retired super early in my 30s so I look for more things to occupy my time. I do the cleaning myself…it’s actually kind of soothing and I enjoy some manual labor.

I bought a Honda powerwasher 3,500 psi, and later bought a wood washing tip (after destroying some of my deck from the extreme pressure). I blew some skin off my hand by accidently discharging the pressure held in the line after the machine was turned off.
