    What a mess

A family's granny recently made the news here. They live on a tract of forest land, and granny had her own house apart from the rest of them. Now granny's house is no prize, in fact it's a dump. Unpainted particle board siding which will fall apart in the rain, and a Wall Mart roof, otherwise known as a tarp. An old and much ripped tarp. You wouldn't want your mom staying there.

But that's not why granny's in the news. Starting with one pair thirty years ago, granny now has four hundred cats. Or did have. She's in the hospital from trying to live in a house full a cat shit. Everybody else is wondering what to do with the mess she and her cats made. Four hundred half wild cats? The county washed their hands of it, they say it's not their department. While people might adopt some a these critters, it's no more than a drop in the bucket. There's not much local shelters can do for four hundred feral cats either. Vets and shelters have offered to fix the cats, but there's nowhere to put them except back at granny's, which the family doesn't want. Don't blame them for that, but I think the process has started anyway. Now my cat got fixed at a high end vet and it cost a lot. At their prices if would take 200K to sort out this mess. Even at reduced rates this is going to cost the earth. You happy now granny?

I've nothing against cats, in fact there's a small feral family of cats that live in the wooded area behind my apartment and I'm of the opinion that they are good for keeping other pest numbers down (like rats etc.) and occasionally feed them.

But 400? I have to ask what kind of "family" would allow this to happen however difficult it might be to persuade granny that things had to change?

In Tower County Sheriff Tower would shoot all the cats, toss them in that shit shack, 5 gallons of diesel, let a match take care of the rest! Nobody need be bothered by grannies eccentricities! I'll have it all cleaned up with a smoldering hole in the ground by noon! Just in time for lunch!

I knew that would be the Tower method. In less politically correct days that probably would of happened, and it wouldn't of even made the news. Sad truth is, then or now there's no humane method for dealing with 400 cats.

The news didn't show any of the family's property except for granny's house. It's just a guess, but since mom's place was such an evil dump, the rest of the family's probably not going to make "Better homes and gardens" either. Take a place in the country and turn it into a slumlords dream. Go figure. I guess we really do haul our problems around with us.

The best way to deal with small groups of feral cats is to get them fixed and return them to where they lived. That way they don't breed, but will protect their turf from other cats. If you just get rid of the cats, their soon replaced by other's. They cut a hunk of their ear off so people can tell their already fixed. My last cat only had half an ear on one side.

Sad truths and humane aside, reality is that Homo-Sapiens has been controlling and managing the environment since hand-axes and fire and so we usually outsource the squeamish stuff to ugly poor people so as to keep a veneer of our humane saintliness but actually....

    Just cull the bastards.

Feral cats destroy an astronomical amount of wild life, often bring to silence any habitat they infest, and bullets are humane, Sheriff Tower unleashed would poison all the feral cats for project efficiency, therefore making breakfast by 9:00 instead of lunch by noon! I get shit DONE!

400 semi feral cats now with no food. One massive disaster in the making.

    Re: What a mess

Now back when I had my little mini-farm I kept 2 "clipped" Tom Cats. Both were good working animals for me. They both patrolled the land at night and kept the rodents down at my feed barn. On occasions I would let them in the house and give em a treat, but the wifey back then wanted to make em house pets... Well Tom and Tom wanted no part of her shit! (I should have listened to what they had to say back then...right?) They lived outside,...did their jobs and were happy as two king daddy nut clipped Toms could be ...

Cats get a bad rep in this life... When I was younger I would 12 gauge any cat I saw! Then I learned all LIFE has a right to Life!

    But 400? dayum bro!!!!!

Leave the population alone to fend for itself, and it will slowly self-regulate down to a size where it will self-sustain, exactly the same way all other wild animal populations self-regulate. But humans always want to stick their dicks into things like this. It's all based on inflated egos. They think they know best. They typically know very little.

There's a town in Washington called Vader (yeah, as in Darth) that the news says has been over run by feral cats. The cause? People losing their jobs and homes and leaving their cats behind. What does that say about Australia, I wonder?

Since nobody I know wants a litter a kittens every six months, our females are fixed. Still, there must be a fair amount of people who don't, or Vader wouldn't be in this fix.

Our cats were probably not native to Australia. If so that would help explain why they do so much damage. Not that American cats aren't murdering bastards, they are. But the wildlife is at least somewhat used to them.
