Re: Uhm men are avoiding xmas parties...how comes?

Parties at work have slowly been going out of style for a long time. They are at best a leftover from another age.

I went to many such events over the years. Usually wasn't that keen on going, but had to keep up appearances. Kept a low profile and left when I could. Nothing bad ever happened, but nothing good did either. So I'm not sad to see workplace parties fading out.
Every day I make the world a little bit worse.

Staff Christmas parties are painful. I too only go to "keep up appearances" which is a disgusting activity i hate to lower myself to.
But, society plays these games and having a job means being part of society.

So, these games must be played.

But they still can't make me give a fuck.

Alcohol and the people you argue with the rest of the year is never a good combination.

I keep it to one or two drinks in the nearby pub (at the most) after work on the last day then head home.

Always keep your drinking friends and work associates separate.

For me it's simple: you want me to spend time with coworkers, pay me. I've also seen enough inappropriate behavior by sober women at work I don't even want to know what happens when they get drunk.

Great advice. And hope like hell they never meet each other!

Mine was deadly boring and I left early on purpose. I have heard of "accidents" happening and being drunkenness and coworkers perfect ingredients for a disaster, I would advice anyone to keep it as low profile and as sober as possible. Not going all together is often frowned upon though.

Re: Uhm men are avoiding xmas parties...how comes?

Not to sound like a prude, but I found alcohol in any form used by anyone alters the state of mind, I gave up everything at once and stomped my own path with endless days of doing whatever the fuck I want! It was like a light switch went on and I recognized a different (less traveled) path, this path was in a different universe than the one I was on, my most productive and prosperous years followed this life choice "change". I lost all interest in the things that disappointed me and pursued whatever delighted me, whatever inspired me, my life became my own, I found peace and serenity that I traded conflict and the sorrows that accompany it. I abandoned a culture that didn't give one solitary concern for me, used me, abused me, unaware of their own decrepit character and personality defects. I took the chisel of logic and started sharpening my life for much better things, I did everything to relieve mental conflicts like smoking, drinking, womanizing and taking unnecessary chances that lead to uncontrollable disastrous outcomes. I stopped doing the same ole circle of events expecting different outcomes, I chased full circle and found one must attack the root of the problem instead of picking the ever growing leaves. I found I could kill the tree of inequity by killing the roots and allowing time to decompose the trunk and limbs, all the while new and better things sprang forth after the shade of darkness was lifted.

I found paradise within me! I refuse to live under the trees! Metaphorically and literally!

Sounds great, can you explain more in detail how you did it? Can you provide real life examples? Thanks

Dropping bad habits takes realization first, then the ability to project where you'll be when relieved from any particular vice. It's like any storm, just realize the gnawing temptation will subside someday and the reward is freedom from that vice. March madness, 1992, when I decided to quit smoking, worst month of my life! For nearly a year I found myself patting my pockets looking for the pack of cigarettes that were supposed to be there, pure habitual! Then I would realize I quit smoking. Dreams too, I would wake up and be depressed that I had started smoking again and then realize it was only a dream.

Womanizing was the easiest to quit because the trail of damage could be felt, I didn't have wait decades for it to become carcinogenic like smokes!

Alcohol, I weaned myself off it by not having more than one drink, and even then it was only after a 2.5 mile drive to our ski house and only one shot when I arrived and nothing more the entire stay, nor any when I returned home, having one and only one made me feel how shitty alcohol was in small a dose not reaching the "feels good" stage of several drinks, I dropped that habit by the end of the ski season and never drank again.

I guess I put my mind to it and looked at the suffering as temporary like a bridge that needed crossing, I just kept thinking about the other side where I wanted to be. The impulses came further and further apart, however the first 4 days off nicotine were mental and physical hell! My insides were in turmoil! After that I didn't want to smoke knowing that I may never have the strength to quit again, I mentally saw myself for the next few decades hopelessly addicted and wrestling with the conflict of knowing what it could do to me, and the monetary cost. I quit when butts hit $2.00 a pack! Started when they were .50 cents! I likely saved the equivalence of purchasing a new car!

Freedom comes in all shapes, forms, and sizes, freedom from vice is the closest and most immediate reward you can achieve, the benefits are felt soon thereafter as time, effort, and energy saved are applied to other worthwhile and rewarding endeavors.

I could go on and and on but this is just a summery.
