I remember seeing schematic drawings of the ship. The Titanic didn't have true watertight compartments, which was a fatal design flaw. Bulkheads separated areas of the hull, but were left open at their tops under the deck so a gap allowed water to flood adjacent compartments as one filled and the ship listed.

They didn't go any higher than 'E' deck, and could stay afloat with something like any 2 or 3 compartments breached, or the first 4 breached.
Its collision with the 'berg took out the first 5, so the water spilled over the tops of the bulkheads, like an ice cube tray.

Titanics' sister ships: Olympic and Britannic had the bulkheads extended up to the main deck afterwards (Britannic was still under construction at the time).
This allowed the first 6 compartments to be breached and remain afloat.

Of the 3, Olympic was the only one that never sank, it was scrapped in the mid 30s,
while during WW1, Britannic either was torpedoed or struck a mine, plus a number of its watertight doors malfunctioned,
plus many of its portholes were open for ventilation (was used as a hospital ship at the time), and sank in less than an hour.

Anyways, just my $.02. This sort of thing interests me.

Thanks for the clarification. It's been a long time since I saw those drawings, but that design flaw really stood out once you noticed it.
