Thread: The Soviet Union

I work with a Russian guy. He was born and raised in the Soviet Union. Spent most his life there. We got to talking about divorce. He told me that he has a son who is 39 and never married. He told me that his son has no desire to marry because of divorce laws are so harsh.

Then my co-worker told me how divorce was handled in the former Soviet Union. He said that no one got alimony. Period. He said that when married couples got divorced all assets were split 50/50. And the father was required to pay child support. The child support was reasonable. Enough to raise a child.

Next time someone says that women can't live without alimony, remind them how it was done in the Soviet Union.


BTW, they guy told me that when he first hear of alimony he thought that his friends were lying to him. That it was prank played on him by his friends. He did not believe it. It was not until he researched alimony on his own that he realized that his friends were telling him the truth. At which point, he said, "What! Are Americans crazy!"

But recall that in the USSR, BDG was on steroids. Alimony is not necessary in a state that takes 80% (or whatever) of your income and redistributes it to women.

Right. And Western women want both. They want a comprehensive cradle to grave welfare state that can take care of all her needs and they want alimony. So Western women expect both. They want men to work like slaves to pay for her welfare state and pay for her alimony.

Very insightful of you both. I guess it is true that "women can have it all!"

With the nanny state taking everything you earn on Monday and Tuesday, then the local government taking everything you make on Wednesday, and an ex wife taking everything you make on Thursday and and Friday morning, how long before you wind up in a homeless shelter or prison?

In ten years, we will have to have an "underground railroad" for fugitives from spousal support.

I can envision a TV series like the 1960s David Jensen vehicle "The Fugitive" where a man is on the run from family court. He gets cornered by a law man and cries out "I can't pay anymore. I didn't hold back anything from my wife!" The cop says "I don't care!" after which the fugitive jumps off the cliff.

One of my relatives is not far from that. He's dirt poor but Ex-wife #1 is allowed by Canadian law to still come after him for more $$$, even though they split over 20 years ago.

While USSR was taxing 80%+ or more, nobody including women actually got any of that. Having grown up in USSR, I can tell you that it wasn't a nice version of Socialist Europe or welfare USA. In ex-USSR eastern European countries women were absolutely screwed if they didn't have a guy with them, so they would actually try pretty hard to keep them around. And courts couldn't care less about extracting any alimony unless you already had lots of cash to pay off judges.

That is the same reason why so many Russian/Ukrainian/Moldovian women are on the internet trying to get a few bucks by scamming Western men - those women are broke and ex-communistic government provides no help.
