I actually stoped going to the Y close to me in a nicer part of town because of all that. Especially after 4:30 or so. Women and men prancing around me looking in the mirror is not how I lift weights. I now go to a Y 15 miles away in a small town where the free weight area is more old school...old building, lower ceilings, mostly dudes that don't give a shit about fashion, not many women and not super crowded almost ever.

The idea of a garage or basement gym is sounding pretty good though...you really don't need that much equipment to do most of the basic movements. I could probably get by with just a flat bench, adjustable dumbbells and a bar to do pull-ups. Walk around outside for cardio or use a jump rope.

What do you do to train legs?
My knees have been bugging me so I'm hesitant to squat. A guy is suggesting that I go to a gym and use machines to train legs.

The gym bro culture will tell you barbell squats are required, but they aren't worth the risk of injury for me. In the gym I do leg press, deadlifts and play a little basketball. Not trying to set any strength records and there's only so much muscle you can add without steroids. If your knees are bothering you I'd probably take that advice and start very light on machine weights with slow and controlled form. Probably start so light that it's incredibly easy with the long term goal of slowly adding weight with no pain during the movement. If there's pain drop the weight down...when pain is gone add a little more as needed.

Brock, this is seriously all that you need. You can do it at home easily. Start by sitting on a chair and just standing up. That's how you build up the strength in your knee ligaments. Do sets of that. Graduate to doing air squats. When you feel strong enough, add some weight like a sandbag, or maybe rubber bands for resistance.

Normie masses have discovered the gym and they're ruining it for everyone else, as is tradition. My local gym was so full at 7:30 PM today they didn't have any free lockers left and I went back home. It used to be half empty at 5 PM.

Thanks for the suggestions. The pain is usually limited to when I'm sleeping but sometimes it can pop up during the day. It seemed to have gotten worse when I started doing bodyweight squats when I started getting into a higher rep range. I've done squats on and off for years, and never really had much success with them.

It's still January. Give it a month or two and half of them will probably be gone.

I was doing the air squats when the knees started giving me some trouble when I hit 30+ reps. Perhaps my stance was not wide enough.

I'm no expert, but I found squats were not good for my bad knee. Steps or stairs added the strength I needed. Switch the leading leg 1/2 way. (Step up with both feet, pause, step down with both feet, pause). Start small, you don't need more damage. Once strength is back, increase the height of the step and the duration, don't use your hands if possible.

No problem with my knee for the last 6 months. I could likely try doing squats again.

I've been working out since I was a kid, middle age now. Before covid I was using leg press and leg machine curls, and had to resort to a bike on high tension when the gyms closed down for communism (er I meant "covid").

Have continued to use only the bike. I do really high resistance for a time, then get off it and do some weightless squats to keep the movement intact. Just slow deep squats. They're hell after you've hit a bike hard for a minute, and the results seem to be basically the same as when I was using leg press pre-covid. It's very taxing, as it should be, but this option is now even more preferred...I don't want to risk using those heavy weights any longer, no need.

BUT: If leg press FEELS ok to you...perhaps limit your range of motion...use it. I'd use light weights but go slowly, you'll feel it, the work will get done with less risk.

I work out at home but have considered joining a gym since I don't have a leg press, leg extension machine, etc.
I think I'll give bodyweight squats another try. I think part of my problem was that my rep count was getting too high. I like the idea of doing them after biking since this would allow me to do fewer reps before reaching failure.

I had similar questions for decades before I started lifting. But I can tell you this:
* The exercise does just feel good
* Being strong is fun
* Being fit makes other sports/activities you do better

I like the gym but I'm not there to become more attractive.

I saw a young blonde girl about 20 or so who had shorts on with about an inch of butt cheek hanging out...along with a sports bra. I mean in a crowded gym full of men and kids in some areas...jeez. There's also a woman about 40 who wears similar shorts and gets up on the stairclimber thing in the middle of the gym everyday at 5 like clockwork. These are just two attention whores amongst others that stick out in my mind.

The whole gym thing for many women has become a way of getting extra attention...I guess social media isn't enough. But with many of them taking pics and videos I guess the gym is part of their social media.
