    Shitty Jobs?

Or as Mexican's say; trabajos de mierda!

Opaque's disgust in his job and his lack of incentive has inspired me to create this thread.

What's the crappiest job you ever had and what made you migrate to something better?

I started working at age 11 helping a coach builder repair buses, he used me in tight spaces to back the rivets while he air hammered the heads, he taught me how to do aluminium sheathing so it's not buckled, bunched, or wrinkled.

Work life went down hill from there! I've had great jobs and shitty jobs, the people you work with, or in Opaque's case, the people you work against, usually determine if it's a good job, or a bad job, unless the conditions are brutal and the hours long, then it's automatically a BAD JOB!

    I'll kick this off with;

Mine was hand digging trenches under historic structures where I beams could be rolled in for lifting or transportation to a new site, the other work on site was brutal too, we had to provide a moving mat of lumber over soft ground like a tank rolling its tread with wheels, except these wheels were large aircraft trucks with 4 tires each, the worst part was setting up 6X6 cribbing in pine (easy light) or oak (ball busting heavy) with rough cut thick planks. Tons of rough cut lumber were used to fill in basements to support the re-purposed landing gear, once supported and resting on the gear, it was time to make the move. Some structures weighed more than a couple locomotives, mansion size, fire places, chimneys, full of horse hair plaster, oak, elm, and 4 stories. I road some of them while on the roof cutting limbs and branches in the way. While the structures were in motion to next cut, I would stabilize myself on the peak like a cowboy riding a dinosaur, sway two floors up plus the roof was stomach churning and very unsettling!

That was the worst job I ever had when it came to disrespect from the owner toward all the workers, we got cheated on hours regularly and nobody liked the owner, he was also more than willing to risk human life, during on move he ignored my warnings to stop and block up a curb so the truck wouldn't bind on the ankle, the ankle broke, the structure was blocking traffic for hours as we worked feverishly to pop it back in after lifting and jacking and yes, blocking the curb that popped it in the first place! Mean bitter son's of bitches they were! Miserable and always fighting a screaming between the son and his father (the owner).

All wasn't lost, I was able to those unique set of skills to lift, shore, and restore the home I live in now, plus jobs over the years that require heavy lifting, jacking, and shoring. The I beams I used to lift this place are were integrated into the structure and now support the entire floor, the hundred or more 6" X 6" wood cribbing that was used in the lift, was also reused to build a work shed the same way as a log cabin, its walls are 6 inches thick! It's bullet proof!

WHAT'S THE WORST JOB YOU EVER HAD? OR THE WORST PEOPLE YOU WORKED FOR?

    Re: Shitty Jobs?

I was working in a bar for this guy. He was a friend of a friend of a friend.
I clocked in on time and did overtime for free. Did extra chores not in my job description.

Worked hard and at the end of the week, I was told 'would you mind waiting until next week for you wages?'
I didn't complain. Next week came, and I never asked about my wages.

I just stopped going. He called and left a VM. 'We have the money, we will pay you blah blah blah'.

I though to myself then, 'this isn't going to work' and stopped going. A few months later the bar was shut due to some illegal activity (from what I gather).

A friend of a friend of a friend is distant enough to put them in enemy territory! Enjoyed your post, as usual...

Commercial cleaning is pretty sucky - did it for a few years. The heavy stuff is done overnight; cleaning & polishing floors etc.

For a year or so when I was really stuck for money I ended up cleaning toilets in a pub. Man was that bad. Shit and piss everywhere and fag ends in the urinals (that had to picked out by hand) in the "gents"; toilet paper, jam rags and tampons all over the place in the "ladies". And yes I wore gloves.

Even the walls had to be washed down - by hand. I can't describe just how disgusting the whole thing was. And to make matters worse I knew almost all the patrons.

Man that was an eye-opener to human nature, though I often had to close those same eyes, and try not to breathe while working.

I think you might have to explain that slang term for the benefit of the stateside readers on here.

I did carpet cleaning for 2 years, we done the whole spectrum of jobs. At one end were the 1000 pound a night hotel rooms but even they often consisted of cleaning up vomit due to the posh idiots drinking loads of red wine.

At the other end were the bedsits, student accommodation and old peoples homes. Some of the most vile smells and sights I have ever come across in my life. If you kept a dog in some of those places you would probably be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Milking cows. Now I raise beef cattle and farm. Much better. Working telecom for a railroad was a good gig until management overturned the apple cart in late 2017 and I quit a bit over two years ago. I miss a lot of the people and a few not at all!

    I've seen this elsewhere:

    The work is hard,
    the hours are long,
    the pay is low,
    and the boss is mean,
but other than that it's a pretty good job.

Was it just really bad conditions for every job, when you were working, or was it just some of your jobs that the places smelled and were terrible?

LOL. I didn't think, what can I say.

As Tower says, fags is slang for cigarettes, and sometimes a derogatory for gays. So to clarify, I had to clear cigarette ends and not gay peoples' posteriors.

My time as an Army grunt had to be the worst, even in peacetime it sucked. But like my father once said, "the Army dont want peacefull contented soldiers."

A copper smelter in the Nevada desert was next. If a guy had a little seniority he could do alright, but entry level stuff was truly awful work. Logging or being a wildland firefighter was no picnic either.

Some a the worst times though, were having an ok to good job, but a bad boss. Bad boss's are poison.
Every day I make the world a little bit worse.

    Re: Shitty Jobs?

Hmm worst job was when a Contractor sent me to head up a crew of 40 guys out to a Waste Treatment Facility for "ShutDown" and Equipment modernization. What that actual means is the plant was in operation and we worked 12 hour shifts replacing lighting, motor control centers, Transformers, Lagoon Liquid transfer Pumps and various other electrical apparatus throughout the Facility. It is called "shut Down" due to the time constraints involved in a scheduled completion date.

Some areas were not so bad.....say like the Lab...or the main control office....there we only had lighting to replace and was quickly completed.. that lasted about 2 weeks....then the shit hit the fan!

The other areas were disgusting to say the least... This was a plant that was operating 24/7 converting piss and human shit into municipal drinking water. Most all areas were "WET" areas.. Everything was coated with a brown sludge , most all pipes were constantly dripping. The concrete floors were about 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep in this liquid crap... The smell was ungodly nauseating. I had 5 guys quit the first week!

The worst of all of it was changing the pump motors in the Lagoons. The Lagoons were very large rectangular concrete pits 30Ft. deep and 200 Ft. long by 50 Ft. wide.....there were 8 of them. Each lagoon had a circulation pump and a "blender" motor. Both were mounted in flotation rings that would rise or fall according to the level of the liquid. To change out these huge motors (600 HP 3 phase GE motors) the pits were drained down so the equipment would rest on the bottom. We had to climb down in that mess...there was still at the very least 1 Ft of liquid shit you had to wade thru to work on cutting these pump motors loose and replacing them. Most all the crew including myself were constantly sick.

To make matters even more ridiculous, The Contractor was getting hit with monetary penalties for missing certain deadlines returning equipment back into service... The cheap bastard tried to do this job with half the manpower need ...on top of that he quit providing Personal safety equipment.....masks, gloves,...rubber boots....field clean-up stations and safety face shields.....citing funding problems.

After contracting a nasty lung infection, I called the O.S.H.A. Field office to complain of safety violations.... They came out....issued the Contractor a hand full of citations ...the Municipality hit him with more missed deadline charges... And the Son of a Bitch fired me!!! LOL I was so fookin happy I wanted to kiss the bastard!

I could have "quit" anytime I guess,...But I'm the kind of person that makes every effort to complete what he starts.....
Plus America and the World didn't get built by quitters.

This is one of the most eye opening job stories of hard jobs, I would not think of right away that are really hard to work and also, thanks for explaining this in great detail its great to learn about something, I never knew took so much time and the process to it all. Did you ever do something similar to that ever again?

    Re: Shitty Jobs?

No not really. Out of the 28 + years I work the Construction Industry I'd have to say that was the worst.

many jobs we were on had piss-poor working conditions but had excellent supervision and the companies did all they could to help us and show appreciation...

other times the job conditions were fantastic but the Contractors were a PIA to work for..

Here is and example of the last condition.

Back in the mid 80's I worked on one of the Nations first Oil Super Ports. It was down in Galliano Louisiana, Lafourche Parish. 90 miles south of N.O. down on the very toe of the Louisiana Boot. In the Bayou about 20 miles North of Grand Isle La. The place was a pumping station that downloaded oil from Tankers and pumped it all the way up to the Refineries around N.O and other areas. We took a boat out to the job site each morning...the Job was on a perforated cat-walk platforms stretching well over a mile thru the swamp. The platforms were on average of 20 ft. above the water... Man that was a helluva fine assignment! Great working conditions...the Pay was fantastic for the times....the area was beautiful....during lunch break we could drop a line and catch fish..... Many times we'd kick back with a doobie and watch the snappy-gators swim around and play..... All kinds of exotic birds and and swamp animals could be seen nearly every day.... sunny and warm with a nice salty breeze most days, great Job my friend!!!
But the contractor was a piece of Fookin work....real assholes to have to deal with......Since it was a very small community the local banks were not able to handle that many paychecks on a Friday afternoon so the "contract" stated the company was required to pay you off in CASH each Friday..... Well we might have to wait and hour or two on our time to get our money. More times than not our hours were wrong and we were shorted on the money... They'd get all shitty over it and claim it was our fault somehow...but then say it would be added to our next check..sometimes it would other times it may take a few weeks and many threats just to get what you were owed. Most of the Job Foremen were straight up assholes that you could never do enough or work hard enough for.. But it was a great job!

So for the most part all the years I spent in the Trades the good and bad balanced out...that is except for the SHIT PLANT job...

Yeah you had to do that hard labor job, then the company, couldn't even pay you, that's messed up. I hope you got paid very well for that job as well.

No it was hit and miss to be fair.

Funny thing is I have never left a job because it was dirty, it was always the idiots in charge.

Shitty Job? I'd say this qualifies.! :/
I know what it's like being shorted on pay! My brother and I ran a construction company as partners. After a string of default payments (getting screwed) yet making good on the pay for our employees, we were financially crippled! I was in my late 20's by the time the 80's recession hit us like a ton of bricks (as they always do to the working stiff), this one contractor tried to short us for a substantial part of the job, I had enough and had to show him my debt collector (revolver), the cock sucker still ended up cheating us but for substantially less, it was then and shortly after we decided to walk away from the business and focus on something else.

I opened a body shop (chop shop) not the kind with stolen cars, the kind where we pulled and spliced insurance auction wrecks and classic restorations, it was a way to limit the number of people I had to deal with and the several ways they would screw me for pay. It was a business where I could say "take or leave it, there's a line of buyers behind you", I set my price and walk away. That was all fine and dandy, but at the same time other shops (dishonest shops) were buying stolen auto parts from the stolen car market, airbags and body parts were stolen instead of ordered, the shops would give the thieves a parts list of the parts they needed for collision work paid by the consumer's insurance.

The state started a re-inspection program where all the parts needed certificates of origin and sales receipts, and the State Police with RMV were in charge of the inspections, the backlog they created (by typical stumbling bureaucracy tripping over the quagmire they created) meant my cars ready for sale were staled for 6 months or more awaiting State salvage inspection. This put me out of business (the honest guy), and only inconvenienced the criminals.

Now I'm in a no holds bared for my own survival, the real criminals are the bureaucratic helping hands that tend to set up bureaucracies that destroy us! Fuck them and fuck that!
Are the laws and order within your society a bit unreasonable, counterproductive, and even hazardous? That's the mark of feminism diligently at work in your society. Need relief? MGTOW is the only ejection seat available to men facing this live systematic crash and burn scenario.
