Yeah, taking the RP, growing older - it's startling to see hookup culture, bar culture from the outside. Because the only reason, the only reason to be there is the remote possibility that you might get laid off a fat chick with diseases. I used to tell myself I went for the live music. Especially now, with Tinder, there's simply nothing there. There never really was. Just a boring way to waste a few precious hours of your life and then die driving drunk on the way home.

Or end up like my friend Billy that was sleeping in the back of a Ford Pinto that struck a tree unfortunately on the side where his head was laying, Billy was never the same after that, he had a scar half way around his head from traumatic brain injury and skull cap removal surgery. That was 1979, he was on his way back from Shaker Park, Hazardville, Connecticut, with some other friends I knew that went to Connecticut where the legal age was 18 and Massachusetts jacked it up. Shake Park was an area nightclub that featured live music on weekends, Billy left home that night and never came back.

When they started biting down on drunk drivers here 40 years ago, a lot a guys went; "I don't care, they can't tell me what to do." Then when they discovered they could have taken the family to Hawaii for the same money, that changed their tune.

This didn't kill the bar culture, but it sure slowed it down. Then the economy tanked, and most people did their drinking at home. Glad I'm not in the bar business. There used to be a lot more.

Age did it too, I'd be gone by now even if didn't have to worry about the law.

Seems like the women that would frequent bars and be down to shag after meeting in a bar would have a tremendous amount of mileage on them….along with at least HPV and/or herpes. Plus bars are usually loud and full of obnoxious people filled with liquid courage. Never been a place I like to be. The entire idea of meeting a woman in a bar seems like a huge red flag. Now that I’m older, thinking of 35-45 year old sluts (most of what’s in bars around here) and their meat curtains in a bar almost makes me vomit.

We sat down at the bar. After a few minutes a band started playing. Their first song was by Eminem. Never in a million years did I ever believe that a pub band would play a song like that. Attitude girl came inside and sat with a table of her friends. They were all English and about the same age. The other thing they had in common was that they were all overweight. Every single one of them. The hookers were more fuckable than these chicks. They were all doing their very best to desperately have a good time.

I watched a documentary on the Korean War, they were interviewing a nurse who said that over there a woman who would normally never get looked at was all of a sudden a hot commodity. I would imagine it would be the same for these fat white women, they would probably mostly attract the local men who idolize white and particularly blonde women.

I felt a serious disturbance in the force. Who were these people? Where did they come from? I hadn’t seen one individual of this demographic the entire time I had been down here, and now we were in a bar that was packed with them. The band was truly awful. The drummer had one beat which he played on every song. The guitar sounded like it was being dragged along the bodies of every cat dying in the world at that moment. They played another awful R&B rap type of song. Then they played something by Abba. I didn’t know what was happening anymore.
I realized that I didn’t have anything in common with any of those people. That somehow I had moved on, and now their presence was disturbing to me. I felt pity for them. I observed them with the awareness that everything that they were doing and engaged with, on every individual level, was wrong and self destructive. My beer tasted bland.

I love music and used to see heaps of live bands back in the 90's. Not many of them were all that good, mostly bands who pushed the distortion to the max and sounded like mud. It was during the Grunge/Pop Punk period but not many of the bands really followed that sound. It was just murky and every song sounded the same and I often wondered how they could even remember what they were playing as it just sounded like shit.

You could still smoke in bars back then and I did more than my share of passive smoking. The bars were just a thick haze of smoke.

I knew I didn't have much in common with the people around me. Depending on the bar the people could vary a little. I also frequented poetry readings which tended to have Leftie types who would write technically perfect yet deadly boring poetry.

One day I was just sitting there minding my own business when a bloke came up to me and asked "What's wrong, not drinkin'?" I did drink and had my share of drunken nights. But I would sober up quickly and I never liked the idea of being one of these drunk all the time, can't do anything without a beer types. They didn't look happy much less content to me.

I never did much in the way of trying to get laid but I did have women smile at me, give me the come hither look. Being rather quiet and usually no where near as drunk as other blokes, I was probably seen as a catch by many.

When I was at College we would go to the pub over lunch and watch the strippers, back then Melbourne didn't have actual strip clubs in the sense of table top dancing places. You had to go to an adult cinema or a pub that had strippers and topless bar maids. That was fun and frequently we would go back to class drunk. I was studying hospitality at the time and one afternoon we got drunk, went back to class to find we were going to mix cocktails, ok.. .I was not completely sober for 2 days.

I guess people just try and find connection or are just bored and depressed, need a distraction. I don't know, I am just glad that I didn't spend too much time in the whole bar/pub scene.

I never understood what a golden time it was. The lights looked amazing. These days, everything is just an LED floodlight. Why run a pin spot? Without the smoke, there's no point.

Lesson to young men: Cut out pub crawling, and over the course of your life, you might save a year's worth of your salary.

Do you like to drink? There are better places to do it.

Like to hang out with your friends and chat? You can't do it in a bar, they play the music too loud.

If I took up drinking again, knowing what I know?

I'd be home brewing, selling it to friends, drinking for free, and putting another skill under my belt!

Ah thank you, haven't read any Piggott in a long time. Never read his books but I've heard him on Aaron Clarey's show a few times. Glad he's doing well. Great piece. Yes it's dreary out there. Lots of pigs still at the trough though.

You can do the whole "malt you own mash", but I'm just using the tins of extract at the moment. 20-30 bucks makes 20 litres of pretty good ale.
