Of course mate, some people really need that little sleep. I know few people like that, you are lucky. But not everybody can do that shit. I have tried it for years and all I got was dizzy feeling and fucked up headache with little to no energy. Every person has different tolerance and needs. I use no caffeine and alcohol, I have no apnea, I do intermittent fasting every day and sleep with no light in a room. I usually sleep 7-10 hours (depending on day, sometimes my heavy workout schedules give me overtraining so I sleep like a person in coma lol). It depends on my day usually.

I don't really know if it's it's enough. I can function fine as long as I get at least 5 1/2 hours. Once it dips down to 4 1/2 to 5 hours like I've been getting lately, I start dragging ass a bit and concentration at work is affected. I have bags under my eyes as I type this. I have always had dark circles but they are darker now.

There have been times where I wake up after 3 hours and can't get back to sleep. That seemed to correlate with heavy squat sessions I did especially when eating at a calorie deficit. Working out strenously while dieting has never worked well for me.

Yeah there are some people who can sleep four hours per night and are fine. My grandmother is in her 90s and claims to sleep 4 hours per night for as long as I could remember so maybe it's a hereditary thing. Trump gets by on 4 hours a night.

My workout sessions sometimes go up to 5-6 hours a day (2-3 hour jog & 2-3 hour gym) but I sleep like a baby. I am also used to the calorie deficit issue. I lost shitload of weight (I got down to 59 kg and I am 170 cm) but I managed to gain back 4-5 kg in 1-2 month.
I can't miss a good sleep. These workout schedules exhaust me so sometimes I sleep like 10 hours. IDK why you are like that though, you should be able to sleep at least 6 hours with a heavy squat session.

As a rule, the elderly can get by with less sleep. This is a well known change with getting older.

It's one reason many nursing homes routinely sedated elderly dementia patients, or else those patients would be hollering and active 22 hours per day. I don't advocate sedating them, but I've been a caregiver and understand the problem.

Sounds like there's enough interest for a sleep thread.

When I was young and did large amounts of physical work, I had no trouble sleeping.
Every day I make the world a little bit worse.

Mental health is a complex issue in modern society unfortunately.

Disagree here, some people were "never right" from day 1, just as some people have natural physical defects people can also have natural mental defects. Many are only just being understood. YES I agree that probably 80% are "bullshit" but not all of them. Obviously the fake cases are making it a lot more difficult for the genuine cases to be believed.

Bills, payments, debts. Eat shit food, live shit lives, work in cubicles. How can you not expect people turning crazy and killing people while living like this????

Yes modern life does have a lot to answer for. Most relevant to the manosphere, society telling men to be "nice guys" and women that they can "have it all" are obvious examples. (when they fail)

True....humans have been taking substances to mask the pains of everyday living since the beginning of time. Just because modern "psychotropic drugs" didn't exist a few generations ago doesn't mean people weren't taking something else. With zero regulation and often given to children.

Take your typical modern day mental health case, a post wall single mother of 2 that I know. Imagine the consequences if a doctor actually told her the truth. i.e. "you screwed up your own life with bad relationship choices, you are not a 25 year old supermodel so stop acting like one, drop your 20 point checklist of demands and date an average guy because that's the best you are going to get."

Mental illness is difficult to define and easy to fake. It has opened the flood gates for the attention seekers and work-shy to exploit to the maximum.

Re: Nobody Is Talking About The Record-High Number Of Americans On Psychiatric Drugs . . .

Lots about what's on my mind regarding the topic has been said already. I agree with OP about the over medication of mental issues. However there is a group of patients who actually really benefit from psychotropic medication. Take anti psychotic drugs f.e. Imagine being relieved from a state of psychosis. That state can be pictured as if you're having a nightmare or bad dream. Unless one is able to sleep lucent, during the phase of dreaming you're not aware that you are dreaming. At that point it's reality. When you wake up, you quickly realize it was only a bad dream. But in psychosis the distorted reality is real for the patient.
Also mood stabilizers can be very helpful. People with bipolar disorders can't tell the difference between a normal "bad day" or a normal "good day" from overshooting in one of the moods. The depressions can turn into psychosis and the mania phases into destructive behavior.
OTOH medications are prescribed way too quickly. It seems like it's is a taboo to have bad period in life. Especially if you're believing social media (I abbreviate that to SM for a specific reason). In there everyone is having a wonderful and exciting life. Utter nonsense OC. To prescribe patients with anti depressiva during a normal bad time in life, is IMO really an error in medicine. However there is also patient's behavior. The general idea seems to be "doc, give me a pill to fix my problem." If a patient is nagging about that time and time again, I can somewhat understand the physician is eventually yielding to that demand.

Lastly I don't believe there are that much "fakers." In the sense people are consciously faking mental issues to get medication for that. Yes, attention seekers are onmipresent. But I think most of them genuinely think they have a "real problem, which needs to be fixed by a pill."

I believe most people's issues stem from not understanding the human reward circuit. Our living conditions are no longer any kind of match for our biological system. We have all collectively become the monkey with his "finger on the button", pick your own poisons. If get too far off center you may need a drug temporarily. They don't call it going bananas for nothing! Our bodies though, can make their own drugs. Hence the focus on diet, exercise, meditative practices. The one usually forgotten or deprived is rest. Depression as often as not is the need for "deep rest". The society forces you to keep going when you need to stop. Organizing your life so you can rest or quit a high pressure job etc if needed will do wonders.

5-6 hours? Holy shit. 90 minutes is a long workout for me. Did you get overtrained at all?

I don't know why that the deal with the squats was. My guess is that I wasn't eating enough and it probably wasn't a good idea to do heavy squats while cutting.

I don’t want to get burned out on working out and it’s kinda boring so I only do 45-60 minutes at the gym 2-3 days a week. I’m not trying to break any records…just a routine I don’t mind and may stick with for decades to maintain a certain degree of strength. I don’t do any barbell exercises…dumbbells for chest/back and leg press/machines for legs. I also do a good bit of walking and sometimes shoot hoops for a bit. No desire to be a gym rat or one of those people that run 30+ miles a week.

Of fucking course I get overtraining. Days where I feel like zombie and eat like a goddamn primitive caveman.
Probably. I had a PR day on squats yesterday and I slept like a goddamn baby.

Of course mate, everybody has different goals. I am one of the few people except pro powerlifters or bodybuilders that go hard on working out.I try to push as much as I can because I am in army by 5th of december, I am getting ready for SOF. Thats why I workout around 5-6 hours. What you are doing is pretty fine by health and keeping strength. Hopefully you hit your goals , cheers!

Re: Nobody Is Talking About The Record-High Number Of Americans On Psychiatric Drugs . . .

A lot of comments here about sleep patterns, here are some things I’ve noticed for what it’s worth.

As we age, we become less physically active therefore we need less sleep in order to carry out our daily tasks.

When you’re young you live at full throttle and so at the end of the day you’re worn out and sleep like a log. When you wake, it’s back to full throttle and the cycle repeats.

As you age you throttle back. You’ve experienced a lot and have no need to revisit these things. Your desire for new experiences is marginalised. You no longer need the energy you once did. You slow down.

Specifically with regards sleep patterns, this is my issue:

I’ve no problem getting off to sleep, but after a few hours (2-4) I’ll awaken and have difficulty getting back to sleep. My mind races about totally inconsequential shit that I just can’t seem to switch off.

Sometimes I realise this and force myself to stop. (Maybe force isn’t the right term, but it’s the closest I have) and almost instantly drop off again.

On the weekends this isn’t much of an issue as I can lie in and get the sleep I need even if it is somewhat deferred, but during the week it can be a huge problem.

Waking at 3 a.m. and not getting back to sleep until half an hour before I need to get up for work leaves me drained for the day.

Telling myself to stop thinking about stupid shit sometimes helps but not always.

With regards the O.P., sleep deprivation for whatever reason will undoubtedly lead to mental issues as it diminishes our ability to reason coherently.

Over time, if not addressed, this IMO will equally undoubtedly lead to irrational thinking and behaviour.
