Is it love? Maybe not, as romance scams proliferate

. . . The FTC announced this week that romance-related scams have surged recently and generated more losses than any other consumer fraud reported to the agency last year. The number of these romance scams reported to the agency jumped from 8,500 in 2015 to more than 21,000 in 2018. And the amount lost by victims has quadrupled over that period — reaching $143 million last year. The median reported loss for victims was $2,600, about seven times more than other fraud tracked by the FTC.

Romance scams vary but criminals typically find their victims online, though a dating site or social media. Scammers create a phony profile, often building a believable persona with the help of a photo of someone else and direct communication. They woo the victim, building affection and trust until they see an opportunity to ask for money.

Anyone can be a victim, experts warn. But FTC data found reported romance scams happened most often to those in the 40 to 69 age group. Those 70 and older paid out the most to scammers, with median losses per person of $10,000 . . .

“You have to remember the scammers are out there and they are very good at what they do,” Brill said. He urges people to think critically about what is being told to and asked of them. “The person responsible for your cybersecurity comes down to you.”

What? I refuse to believe that this Nigerian princess who's been flirting with me these last few weeks isn't real.

    So beautiful.

This always makes me laugh. When I did use dating sites I never put a pic up as I was just really wary of the sites and who may be looking at me. I would get lots of responses from women "No pic, you must be hiding something/You must be a fake" a couple of times I did post a pic, one of someone else and they would be all relieved about it because to them that meant I was real. Women are so short sighted and simple minded.

“You have to remember the scammers are out there and they are very good at what they do,” Brill said. He urges people to think critically about what is being told to and asked of them. “The person responsible for your cybersecurity comes down to you.”
Ever seen the pics on dating sites or facebook etc? You get to see where these people hang out, where they work, what they like to do. On Facebook you get their name and even location as well. Always love the ones who post their innocent kids as well. It is really frightening to see how little these people care. It's not about having anything to hide, it's about having something to protect.

Not that hiding anything is bad anyway.

Scamming and fraud is something which is rampant in all romantic entanglements with women. Getting your credit card info or stealing your identity is not even the worst thing they do to men by a long shot. Taking your children, your home, your car, your everything and making you pay for the next 18 years...accusing men of rape or abuse and having them thrown in prison, or costing them their jobs and reputations. Those are just some of the COMMON ways they ruin us. There are plenty who get much more creative than that.

Men's desire for women is our greatest weakness. It is such a huge, gaping weakness, that virtually all women are able to exploit it, and the ones who are adept at exploiting it are able to live off the productivity and resources of hard working men without ever raising a finger. That is why dating women has become such a minefield. They have no incentive to provide real value when they can just exploit us, so they don't. Dealing or compromising with them in any way is a losing battle from the start.

How is this different from every relationship ever?
Isn't getting married and then divorced only to lose your stuff and have to pay a woman for the rest of her life even though she wants nothing to do with you not a scam? Government mandated scam at that.
Isn't having a woman put your name on a child's birth paper even though she knows its not yours a scam?

This scam isn't any differently except for the fact that this one isn't approved by the government.

And look who it's targeting, 40-69 age group, the generation that got screwed by the divorce wave, the ones who still believe in the lie of love and happiness.
If you believe everything you hear is a lie, you have a 100% lie detection rate.
The opposite holds true but I would rather be surprised by the truth than a lie.

Women can attack you as much as they want but are you really allowed to fight back? This place seems to think that you aren't.

Actually, yesterday the cover of a women’s magazine said: “Reading love stories is useful and entertaining”. So it’s official: romance good, porn bad.
