Jordan Peterson: This small habit will help you control your life

Turns out, when I posted some time back that I was doing a total cleaning and organizing overhaul of my living space, I was really onto something. Jordan Peterson is a big advocate of "cleaning your room," and by that he means whatever area you live in, not necessarily just one room. It includes whatever house you life in (all the rooms), and whatever car you drive, if any.

I can attest that that living in a cleaner and better organized space has had a huge effect for the better on my self esteem. It's also made each day easier. Now I can find whatever I need quickly. I don't have to go, "Where's that thing" and then spend time looking for it.

You can't control any of the dumb-ass things that feminists, the government, or just stupid people do, but you do have a huge amount of control over your living area, especially if you live on your own. I'm convinced that exercising this control that you do have is a big building block of building up a better life.

I lived with my pothead ex for 4 years and she wasn’t one for cleaning at all…that really took a toll on my mental state and motivation to do much of anything. She also had 3 large dogs and 4 cats….all in a 1100 sq ft house. A thick layer of dust covered everything…trash, dirt, clothes and animal hair covering the floors. Basically how lazy potheads would live. The day she moved out I started cleaning/fixing little things and haven’t stopped since.

In my experience, your place doesn’t have to be super nice but just being clean/organized with the yard cut if you have one will do wonders for how you feel. Once I got this place clean, I started exercising again…then eating better…then quit smoking cigs. Hard to get motivated to do positive things when you are surrounded by filth and disorganization.

Exactly. You don't have to have a place that's in Better Home & Gardens, in fact, being that sterile and perfect would probably work against you, but if you've got a place that's clean and organized to your lifestyle, it makes life way the hell better.

For me, I have to like where I live to be happy. I want to look forward to coming home, not dreading it because it's a pigsty. Your home is, after all, your own refuge from the clown world outside. Might as well make it nice and comfortable.

For me, it's the garage. I have a nice workbench, all my tools and supplies and multiple bikes are organized, even things like screws and bolts are all organized. I have nice storage closets for all my smaller "fun" gear --skis, snowboards, paddle board stuff, and camping gear. When I need to fix something or grab kit for an outdoor adventure it's all there and ready to go. I put it back in order as soon as I am done. I keep the floor clean. I can walk out there in socks or bare feet even.
