"Free" land in bumfuck nowhere, Australia

    Well, kinda/sorta free.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...uild-free.html
    https://quilpie.qld.gov.au/2021/09/3...quilpie-shire/

The downside is that you have to live smack dab in the middle of fucking nowhere.

The upside is - well - cheap land, and a $12,500 grant. Depends on just exactly how much of a bitch it is to deal with the local council and build as you see fit. Guaranteed they won't let you just pitch a tent. Checking out google maps, it's weird to see all these relatively tiny plots of land surrounded by half a continent of nothing, but that's the price of town water and electricity, I guess. Come to mention it: the yearly price of these things will not be insignificant. Solar is an obvious must-have, for the aircon alone.

Comments on the DM article indicate that living in the outback, 1000km from the nearest maternity hospital is pretty shit for young families. But for MGTOW who can work remotely, maybe not so much. The only thing that matters is how good the internet is.

Pros and Cons. This kind of thing is a possibility. Rural USA probably has similar things going.

Yea, we have $1.00 houses worth .75 cents in high crime areas. We have cheap land north of Las Vegas where at long last the radio isotopes are within the new raised levels of acceptable contamination. There's also remote Alaska on permafrost that's that's proving to not be so permanent.

There's deals everywhere, hell, I found my deal in a Massachusetts condemned family campground!

Australian outback towns have an eerie vibe about them. You don't even have to go too far out to start feeling it. So 1000km from the capital city and you will be in complete culture shock. Then you have to think about the type of people who would move so far out in order to get free land. I think I will give this one a pass.

Here is the Wikipedia page for anyone interested anyway https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilpie,_Queensland

lol I don't live too far from Hanging Rock and the place has a creepy vibe to it. Something very ominous about it. I saw the movie Picnic at Hanging Rock there years back. Never liked the film but it seemed ok there. At the end these girls in period dress of the film came walking out of the darkness behind the trailer with the screen on it. Scared the shit out of me, I don't think they really planned it that way, they were just doing the cosplay thing but great timing all the same.

Not that I'm aware of. However, there are hundreds of towns in the rural west so flat on their ass that moving there would be dirt cheap. Trouble is, there's no work. If you can deal with that, and happen to like the middle of fucking nowhere, your all set. And like the outback, there's not much for services.

Thanks for this. I wonder if they have good internet communication / mobile phone coverage.

Sometimes living in the middle of nowhere is viewed as an upside.

Part of my job involves monitoring premises all over Australia and the remote places are interesting to deal with. It can take ages to get technicians, tradesman out to them and services like the Police (if they exist at all) don't run 24/7.

Internet and mobile coverage can be spotty at best. I can't recall now if it is Quilpie or another remote Queensland town but we lose comms frequently with them due to connectivity issues.

Given this town are hoping to attract young families I can't see the benefits of that demographic moving out there. You would have to have some true pioneer spirit to do so. I think it would be hard enough for a single male who is financially stable.

In the western US, the answer to the the phone/net question is probably yes, but you'd have to check. It's a damn small market we're talking about.

These places usually have a daytime clinic of some sort, but a hospital is going to be an hour or more away. A deal breaker for a lot a older people.

I can't answer for the entire west. But how it works here, if you live in the country, you cant depend on the police for much. If someone's bleeding, they'll come. But if it's just your shed getting broken into, your on your own. Just another cost of living outside the city limits.

Hey Mr. Wombat, I don't have any comments on the topic, but I just wanted to say I'm still laughing my ass off at that "bumfuck nowhere" expression.
