Businessman says he burned $1M in cash to avoid paying ex-wife child support

"A Canadian businessman and failed mayoral candidate was thrown in jail for 30 days after telling a judge he burned 1 million Canadian dollars in cash -- in two separate bonfires -- to avoid paying his wife spousal and child support as part of their divorce settlement, according to a report published Tuesday.
In an Ottawa Superior Court hearing last week, Bruce McConville, 55, told a judge he withdrew about 1 million Canadian dollars -- about $750,000 USD -- in 25 separate withdrawals from six separate bank accounts. He claimed he then burned the cash in two bonfires – $743,000 on Sept. 23 and $296,000 on Dec. 15, Ottawa Citizen reported . . .

McConville said he earned the money he later burned by selling some of his properties and businesses to his former accountant – a direct violation of a court order not to sell his assets. He also has failed to file an affidavit disclosing his finances to the court . . . "

Commenter: "The cost to raise a child is the same regardless of status. If a parent wants to spend more than a reasonable amount it should be on their dime and not the estranged parent just because of their wealth. Child support payments need to be a set amount across the board. For that matter, their needs to be caps set on Alimony and Family Law Attorney Fees which would put an end to the Divorce Circus. There are far more important issues for the courts to deal with."

    "
I get his frustration, I have 50/50 custody and the court gave her way more than half of our assets, on top I had to pay alimony and pay child support as if they live with her exclusively. The problem is, it financial destroyed me and she lives like a queen. The court system needs to change and be less bias toward the woman because they are woman. My ex is evil as evil can get and has lied and lied to get more. The system is the problem for not being more fair and equal. this is why some divorced fathers do crazy things."

Just think, Lurkers - The divorce circus status quo will likely never change in our lifetimes, and if fooled, you too can become one of these stories. Thankfully ALL OF THIS can be avoided by simply avoiding THEM......Do not marry. Do not cohabitate. Do not engage....

Notice what he didn't burn? The suit he got married in? The wedding pictures? The priceless family heirlooms? No, he burned what really mattered to HER.

I foresee more men going totally scorched earth. This is really the last card men have to play if they choose to gamble on a marriage.

Looks like he realized she was divorcing him, but not his wallet or assets. He simply finalized the divorce from himself and all his stuff! Package deal ... divorce me and you divorce my stuff too!

More like cutting off his nose to spite his face. It'll turn out he'll still have to pay the money, and be out what he burned.

I doubt he really burnt anything, that's just his story. He either hid the cash or moved it out of the system into something like gold or bitcoin. That's what I would have done anyway.

It is likewise unconscionable that if you are in a collision with a Ferrari, you will be liable for far more than you would be if you were in a collision with a Fiat. People who choose to drive something like that should take their own risks.

He probably spoke with his lawyer and they balances pros and cons of such decision.

He is in jail now but once he will be out he can go ghost in a country with no extradition and all his precious cash.

I agree, but I don't understand why he felt the need to wave his dick in the judges face. The judge can keep sending him back to jail for contempt until he comes up with the money. It's been done before, although mainly in the US, not sure how Cuckanada deals with these sort of issues.

If I was in his position, instead of doing that, I'd have updated my passport and got the hell out of dodge with the money. You could spend a long time wandering around Europe with that sort of wedge. Alternately rent a shack in rural British Colombia or Alberta and kept a low profile and bought a fake ID.

    Guys a moron.
