As if we need another tale of marriage woe: Dave Foley's Divorce

Sobering video (22 minutes) of how a guy gets screwed in a divorce in Canada. For any lurkers or brothers even remotely considering marriage, the 22 minutes
spent listening to this will be the best time investment you will ever spend.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaC-...ature=youtu.be

Foley, who rose to fame in the Canadian comedy troupe 'Kids in the Hall,' met Southey, a freelance journalist, in 1983 and wed her eight years later.

They divorced in 1997 after six years of marriage. His second marriage to actress Crissy Guerrero ended in 2008. They have a daughter together.

At a Nov. 15 default hearing in Toronto, a judge from the Ontario Court of Justice using information including Foley's most recent tax return
and credit card bills -- upheld the existing child support agreement that says Foley must pay his ex-wife and their two sons child support of
$10,700, which has been indexed for inflation. (Southey waived her right to spousal support when they divorced.)

He also has to pay an additional $5,000 a month toward the $589,082 in arrears that he has racked up since August 2003.
(Southey's lawyer, Jacqueline Mills, says the arrears figure is actually higher because it does not include costs like paying off the mortgage
of the home they shared, to which he had also agreed.)

The Ontario judge said that Foley would go to jail for 10 days for each payment he missed. Foley brought a check for $20,000 to court on
Nov. 15 for back child support, and would have gone to jail if he failed to do so.

Poor guy, same baby face but looks beat down.
Kept his sense of humor though.

This is harsh. Thanks for sharing. Also: --

"The court's assumption is that the children should continue to live at the level they were at, at the time of the dissolution of the marriage."

The same is done here in the Netherlands. An old family friend worked as interim-manager -- that is to say, he filled up temporary spots in businesses. Needless to say, there is always considerable uncertainty about when you will be employed, and for how much. His wife, knowing this, deliberately divorced him after a long interim job with huge payment so that she could get more money. As David Foley mentions, it is not uncommon for people in such a situation to commit suicide, as the man in my anecdote too contemplated. Somehow he managed to make it, however. Too bad I've lost contact with him; he should be almost finished paying by now!
And when her lips so sweetly move
    The soul such height attain,
You're free, yet would no longer rove
But lay you down in chains.

I had the first wife nail me on that income thing too. I had an electronics business and rode a huge wave (home satellite tv) that went down the tubes in mere months after HBO scrambled their programming (1980's). Went from making tons of bucks to owing a fortune. Of course, that didn't mean a thing and no amount of proof made one bit of difference. Yeah, I went and got married again after that one. That's why I am so adamant about telling our younger members and lurkers to beware and listen to the guys with the arrows in their back.
