I personally never understood the fascination with immediately abandoning your family to live alone and struggle financially. It seems that this is a trend that arose in the 80s if anything, perhaps with overbearing parents and the continued devaluation of moral principle.
Throughout much of the world, as well as the majority of US history, multi-generational housing is the norm. You lived with your parents, took care of them as they aged, and your children did the same for you as you aged. This is default, the current trend of moving out is an anomaly.
