LIfe Hacks: preventive maintenance on air conditioner can prevent costly repair

My aircon died last weekend, in the middle of a heatwave.

    BLUF (bottom line up front)

    - maintain evap water system

My aircon captured condensed water in a pan and there is a little motor that circulates it around. Even though I was putting an ounce or two of chlorine bleach into the system every other month, I live in a very humid place and it was not enough.

Thick, gooey stuff clogged the lines, the motor died, and the aircon stopped working.

New motor box cost over $300, and he had to use a hose with compressed air to clean out the line, then a special acid to dissolve the goo.

Repair man told me to switch to vinegar and do it every month.

A YouTube video told me to get "algea tablets" or air conditioner "pan tablets."

Bought some at hardware store, instructions say drop one tab into the system every month.

For our U.S. based members, Home Depot and Lowe's offer 10% discounts to military members and retirees.

My condolences on your recent loss.

Being from Ireland we have very moderate temperatures and don't generally have need of air conditioners, so I have no real experience to offer, but 2 things strike me from your post.

"Repair man told me to switch to vinegar and do it every month." - not exactly clear what this means but vinegar is an excellent tool for the removal of grease. However, wouldn't it stink out your home being put in an A.C. unit? If I were to recommend anything it would be acetone, but do check how it may react with the plastics/metals in your A.C. before use.

As for "Life Hacks" videos, while I've seen some good tips almost genius in their simplicity, I've seen many more that make me think why would you bother, and a few that are downright dangerous. Just a warning to be wary of any advice posted on youtube.

The cap full of vinegar goes into the system that sucks up the water that condenses around the system. You don't smell it.

As for getting everyday, practical advice from the members on this board: we have a collection of guys who know about cars, money, guns, law, business, medicine, etc. I would have no problem taking advice from people on this board.
