Memo to members: Please use Quotes when quoting

    Hi guys,

The owner of this website has suggested that I share this reminder with all members.

When copy/pasting text from other websites, or showing any text that you as a member did not compose yourself, we ask and recommend that Quotes always be placed around the text that you are quoting. This is achieved in one of two ways:

    1) Highlight the quoted text with your cursor then click on the Quote icon in the toolbar above.

    2) Manually type {QUOTE} at the beginning of the copied text and manually type {/QUOTE} at the end of that text.

However, replace the curly brackets {} with straight brackets [] to make it work. I had to use the curly ones here to show you.

If you have multiple instances of text to quote where you are interspersing your comments within the quoted text, then of course you would use multiple sets of Quotes so that your text is not confused with the text you are quoting.

Using Quotes will encase (aka "wrap") the text in a box. For those new members who are not familiar with using Quotes, here is what quoted text looks like, inside a box:

we ask and recommend that Quotes be placed around the text that you are quoting.
Using Quotes in your posts will properly attribute others' text as not yours, especially in instances of a misunderstanding where you do not want to be confused with the person(s) you are quoting.

Important: If you add to your post a link to an article, the link by itself does not need to be encased in Quotes as the fact it appears as a hyperlink indicates it is not your text. However, oftentimes users will also include with that link some text taken from the source being linked, placing this text either directly above or directly below the link as it appears on the page. If adding such quoted text with its link, then encase both the link and this text together in one set of Quotes. Any text that you compose yourself is not included in the Quoted text.

Using Quotes actually is an amazingly simple process that thoughtfully adds clarity and many of our users already do it. We have new members who may not know how to use the tool bar buttons for this purpose or may not be familiar with the material being provided by other members who fail to use Quotes, especially if the text that was copy/pasted appears with its own complicated formatting, making it uninviting for readers to sift through what is being said.

Thank you for your courtesy to use Quotes in your posts. We hope its consistent use provides clarity in messages which improves the quality of communication between members and, by extension, the quality of the site overall.

Memo to members: Please include comments when linking

    Hi guys,

Sometimes we see posts that contain only a link to an external site without any comment placed by the member to introduce or otherwise explain the link. The post contains just a link, nothing else.

Some of our users have expressed an unwillingness to click on links that are unaccompanied by user text, as possible spam or trolling.

In concert with their concern, we are always seeking to improve the quality of this site and, yes, show users we are concerned about unacceptable material.

To make your post more interesting and your link more desirable to pursue, will you please add your comments there, next to that link?

This also applies to embedded videos. Don't count on the embedded video title to explain its content or why you posted it.

Examples of text to add to your post should include any one or more of these ideas:

    1) introduce what the link/video is about
    2) why you thought it is relevant to MGTOW
    3) point out a highlight or two from the information found in the link/video
    4) mention how the information in the link/video affected you or your reaction to it

Those are just examples to add value to your post. Pick one or more that may be least obvious to the members who will read your post. You may have additional comments you can make to have a smart posting.

Your comments are necessary and are above and beyond any text or comments that you may elect to quote from your linked item.

After all, you clearly have an opinion about the link or video that you posted, so don't forget to include it!

Thank you for your assistance in making this forum even better for all users.

Memo to members: Please observe Rules for the New Member Intros forum

    These rules are from 2016:

    http://www.goingyourownway.com/mgtow...ro-forum-8827/

Whereas troll-hunting has become as disruptive as actual trolls, and

Whereas the New Member Intros section is supposed to be a platform from which new members can get their bearings and introduce themselves,

The mod team has decided to set forth the following new rules for introductions:

1.) Do NOT insult prospective members.

2.) Do NOT make posts calculated to harass prospective members.

3.) DO ask questions intended to get information mandated by the intro requirements (such
    questions are not considered troll-feeding).

4.) If a prospective member is obviously a troll, don't feed the troll, contact a moderator.

*Members violating the above rules will receive a temporary ban.

*Remember, trolls will make themselves known. You don't need to help them. Help us instead.
The Rules are not new: insulting prospective members results in a temporary ban. Item 3 above acknowledges that initial Intro attempts may be incomplete. In other words this is not just for people who have registered and who have not even posted an Intro but also for those who have posted an incomplete one.

In fact, insulting any member is against the rules of this site. New members in particular are dis-incentivized to finish the Intro process when insults happen.

Again, these Rules were posted in 2016.

    Thank you.

How to customize links inside your posts

Let's say you want to post a link to an article or a youtube video and the link you copy/paste is not descriptive of what it contains. Let's say you want to have it display text that is more relevant or informative. Let's say you want neither, but are just curious as to what I am going to say here.

For those who don't already know, here's how you do it:

    1) Toggle the A/A button (the Editor button, above your composition box) from its current default WYSIWYG mode to the Source mode.
    2) Position your cursor in your composition box to where you want the link to appear.
    3) Click on the Link button above your composition box. It's the Globe with the little goggles or bicycle chain. This will cause to appear a pop-up like this:

    4) In this pop-up, paste the link, then click OK.
    5) Because you are in Source mode, you will now see your link URL shown twice, like this example:

    {URL="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/7bdwyx/inside-the-global-collective-of-straight-male-separatists"}https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/7bdwyx/inside-the-global-collective-of-straight-male-separatists{/URL}

Please note: In these examples, I have replaced straight brackets [] with curly ones {} in order to show you this language in default WYSIWYG mode.

You will also note I have for instructional purposes made red the second link URL that lies between the two sets of brackets, between these: } {.

In reality, between these: ] [

    6) You can replace the red text with whatever you want your link to display, being careful not to also remove the brackets. Typically, you'd use the title of the article or video itself, like this:

    {URL="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/7bdwyx/inside-the-global-collective-of-straight-male-separatists"}Sept 24, 2015 - This Group of Straight Men Is Swearing Off Women{/URL}

You will notice I like to include the date of the article to draw attention to its place in time. That's up to you, of course. When newly posting an old or outdated article, adding the date can help prevent members from reacting to the article as if it just happened.

If you use a word or phrase instead, you can position the link into a sentence of your choice. For example, replacing the red text with the word article would get you this in the published post:

"Hey, guys, here is an article I thought you'd find interesting."

(In the above example, I didn't actually link it because I needed the underlining to be visible to you.)

    7) At this time, you're done. If you are finished with your entire message, you can either post it while in Source mode or switch back to WYSIWIG mode to admire the beauty of your work then post it.

Here is how the link will appear in your published post, using my example:

Sept 24, 2015 - This Group of Straight Men Is Swearing Off Women

Note: Here is the pop-up you get if you are still in WYSIWIG mode and this one will not let you customize the displayed link text:

    That's it. Enjoy.
